It’s been a little while since I last updated as I’ve been hectic with work (boo!), had to reinstall my pc (grrr!) and away in Norway (yay!). So here is the first update with pictures from Levisham (where German forces had occupied a north yorkshire railway station for the weekend). I had a really good time taking pictures there and Das Reich had done a brilliant job organizing the affair. The photos are a bit different from my usual battle images and I really enjoy the variety!

Victory Show pics are finished just waiting on resizing and a rather hefty upload. I’ll try to fit them in this week. I also have photos of another couple of models to go online from a few weeks back, I’m still really enjoying the chance to diversify my portfolio despite mixed reception to the pictures. Love them or hate them I’m still planning more photoshoots in the coming months and hopefully what I’m learning will start to appear in all of my photography. The Levisham pictures are a good example of how I’m seeing photos differently and I think they represent an interesting step forward in terms of my own style.

Model portfolio & The Victory Show

Cats: Uncategorized| No Comments »

Two totally unrelated headlines for this post as I reach the peak of our busy time in work. I had a brilliant time down at The Victory Show a few weekends back and have tonnes of pictures to sort out. Given the madness in work it could be another week or two before they start to filter on here.

In other news I’ve recently been trying to diversify my portfolio into model photography and you can see the results of my first few photoshoots in the gallery. So far it has been great fun and I’ve been really lucky to work with some lovely models. I’m off to Liverpool on Sunday for another photoshoot and have a couple more in the pipeline over the next few weeks. So why not take a break from all the sweaty German soldier pictures and go and take a look over at the gallery.

War & Peace 2009

I got back very late last night from this years War and Peace Show. As usual the show was the biggest of it’s kind with living history camps and vehicles stretching as far as your eye can see. It was a long few days working with the press team to capture pictures of the show and then working on them each night so that they could be uploaded to the official website. Despite the hardwork and the oppressive heat I have to say it was great fun.

Highlights of the show included:

  1. Chatting to Wayne Dobos (the Vietnam veteran) and getting to see him in the Red Baron guntruck.
  2. Running about in the woods with the British airborne and Fallschirmjager chaps.
  3. Going for a ride in the REO convoy
  4. Getting the lads from Rolling Thunder to go swimming in the medway in their kit.
  5. Meeting Albert Figg and the other WWII Veterans at the prize giving.

Lowlights:

  1. The terrible rain on Friday making the showground a mud bath.
  2. One of Rolling Thunder getting injured in the battle on Sunday. I hope he recovers quickly.
  3. Being shouted at and moved by a re-enactor during the “little piece of france battle” despite having arranged to be in that spot before the battle!

All in all it was a good show, the photos look brilliant and as usual I’ll be uploading them over the next couple of days. A big thanks to everyone at the show, the organisers and of course all of the re-enactors that make it so special!

World War II Re-enactors Magazine now on sale!

I’m very pleased to say that I have just received the first issue of the new World War II Re-enactors Magazine and that it looks fantastic! It’s a very interesting read with lots of good articles and I can’t wait to see how it develops over the next few issues. I have to admit I might be a little biased as it does feature quite a few of my pictures including the one of the M8 on the front cover. There is also an excellent piece on Kampfgruppe Stahlkrieger which features some of the pictures from our photoshoot at Whittington Barracks. The photos look really good in print and it’s brilliant to see them complementing articles on the subject!

Needless to say I’ll be busy collecting lots more photos at War and Peace in a couple of weeks and I hope to see you all there! The magazine will be available at the show but if you can’t wait then pop over to the magazines website and order a copy now or better than that… (shameless plug) why not subscribe and get all four of this years issues for a bargain price of £14.35!

Shop open for business

People often ask me how they can get copies of my photos and until now I have been getting my own prints done and then selling them on a request only basis. Photography is a very expensive business and the website alone costs a lot to run. I’m keen to help cover the costs that are involved in keeping the site going, so to kill two birds with one stone I have setup an online shop where people can buy prints from a selection of my photographs. Hopefully the revenue generated with be enough to cover the cost of the website and If I’m really lucky and the prints prove to be popular then I’ll be investing any extra towards new camera gear. In that way everyone is a winner as people get the prints they want and I can look at getting new equipment so I can take even better pictures!

Prints are now available in our online store provided by photobox.com The pictures from last years War and Peace Show are the first available for printing. Currently photos are only available for print in sizes of 7 x 5, A4 and A3. If there is sufficient demand I will add other sizes at a later date as I know the resolution of my images allow them to be printed to sizes of upto A0 without significant loss of quality.

I’m hoping that I will upload more albums as the year goes on so that anyone who is interested can get printed copies of the pictures they want without me having to individually order them myself. Of course the selection of pictures will be somewhat limited as my collection is too vast to fully upload to photobox but I’m always open to suggestions if anyone wants a specific album or picture uploading. Just drop me an email or leave a comment on this post with your request. I really hope that people will purchase their favorite pictures simply so that they can see them at their best. A tiny condenssed jpeg image on a computer monitor doesn’t do justice to the quality of the full resolution pictures and I am always blown away when I see my work in print.

In other news the first of the Barcelona pictures are now online. I probably have a couple of weeks worth of work to do on the rest so expect them to be popping up gradually in the next fortnight.

Scorchio!

A few days of Barcelona sunshine and 38 degree heat and the UK summer seems rather chilly! I had a brilliant time in the city and took plenty of pictures of the scenery. The Gaudi architecture was even more amazing in person than any of the pictures do justice and I fell totally in love with the amazing Sagrada Familia.

I took quite a few pics using my new gorillapod and have to say that it was pretty good. That said a word of warning if you get one yourself.. I was set up with it mounted on a signpost while I took some pictures of a colourful building in the gothic quarter when I was ambushed by amazed Japanese tourists who were all studying the gorillapod. The next thing I know they are taking pictures of me using it! Needless to say my girlfriend was mortified! So if you do get a gorillapod.. keep a keen eye out for any Japanese tourists or you might just end up as a tourist attraction yourself!

I’ll be working on the photos for the next few weeks to get me warmed up for War and Peace. I can see it being a very busy show this year! At least it shouldn’t be any hotter than the last few days!

HUB Festival pics online

I had a really enjoyable day down at the HUB Festival the other weekend. It was boiling hot and I came back with some really good photos and a touch of sunburn! For now I’ve uploaded a little taste of what I took to the gallery so pop over here have a look. The Whittington Barracks pictures are also now finally online so make sure you check them out.

All moved in to my new home but still without broadband.. luckily I have 20mb cable coming in a week which should make things a lot easier! Only a few days now and I’ll be off to Barcelona, I’ve just bought a Gorillapod SLR-Zoom to take with me as I want to do some nice long exposures of Sagrada Familia. HUB festival gave me a chance to try out my new travel backpack ( A Lowepro Flipside 300 ) which I got specifically so it would fit in the carry on luggage for the plane. I was very impressed with it and the way it loads from the back makes it a lot safer for carrying around on holiday.. I’ll see how I feel after slugging 5kilos of camera equipment around for 4 days in the 25-30 degree Spanish sun!

Whittington Barracks photoshoot

I had a very enjoyable time down in the Midlands with the folks from Kampfgruppe Stahlkrieger and the photoshoot produced some excellent pics. The barracks made for a really interesting backdrop for trying to capture period images and all of the group were really up for it (even when I had them running backwards and forwards in full kit quite a lot!). While I finish off sorting out the pictures to upload I’ve taken the time to catch up on my old pictures and put on sets from the Victory Show in 2006-2007 and a few landscapes.

Things are going to be pretty hectic the next few weeks as I’m moving into a new flat with my Girlfriend and then I’m off to Barcelona. No sooner will I have got back and settled and it will be time for the War & Peace Show! Fun times!

Some of you might also have seen my work featuring in the World War II Re-enactors Magazine. I’m really excited to be involved in the project and I can wait to see the first copy in print! I’d advise anyone with a keen interest in re-enacting who hasn’t already done so, to go and take a look at the website and see what you are missing out on!

Portfolio uploaded

Most of the new site is now up and running. On the surface a lot will look the same but I’ve put in a lot of work at the backend to try and integrate the photos into the website. A good example of this is the new portfolio page where I’m using a lightbox function to make the whole thing much more seamless.

I’m off to my first Re-enactment shoot of the year this weekend so I’ll be uploading some brand new photos shortly. I also have a lof of Liverpool 08 pictures to go on so I’ll be working my way along with those.

I’ll be making a new links page shortly so if you are interested in having your website linked on here then drop me a line.

Changes..

Hi folks,

I’m pleased to say that the website is currently in the process of being updated and moved over to a new host. Unfortunately this means a few weeks of chaos while I jiggle it around. Rest assured though that it will be up and running in no time!
